PIHL Paddle for Prevention

In Support of Braintrust Canada - Aug 12 - Rotary Beach

Stand Up and Paddle for Prevention

Brain injury is a silent epidemic - few people know how prevalent it really is. The incidence of acquired brain injury actually outnumbers breast cancer, spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, and HIV/AIDS combined. When you SUPport the PIHL Paddle for Prevention you not only have fun, you stand up for something BIG. Thanks for helping BrainTrust Canada raise awareness and funds to prevent brain injury in the Okanagan. You have a chance to win a Westjet trip if you raise more than $500.

I participate in honour of my brother, Kim.

Ron Cannan, Race MC

Our family lives by the philosophy of giving back to the community in whatever way you can, and the Pihl Paddle for Prevention fundraiser for brain injury helps raise awareness of the important and terrific work of BrainTrust Canada (which I have seen firsthand). I am supporting the cause in honour of my oldest brother, Kim, who suffered from brain injury and mental illness and passed away in 2004.

I paddle because BrainTrust is an invaluable resource.

Sean Pihl QC, Pihl Law Corporation

With my work in personal injury law, I see the serious impact of brain injury and how it can change the life of the person with injury in an instant, as well as the lives of their loved ones. That being said, I recognize the invaluable resource that BrainTrust Canada is in our community, helping those with brain injury and their families and making efforts to reduce brain injury, especially among youth. Pihl Law is very pleased to be the Title Sponsor of this unique annual fundraiser, Pihl Paddle for Prevention, and we invite people to support this charity and have some fun on Okanagan Lake with us this year.

I paddle for people like me.

Zara Schultz

11-year-old Zara sustained a brain injury while figure skating in 2014. Among other side effects, she has had daily headaches ever since. Zara?s mother attends BrainTrust?s Family Support Group, where other loved ones share experiences and learn coping techniques. Zara paddles for those like herself, who unexpectedly sustained a brain injury, and for support for loved ones like her mom.

Telus paddles for brain injury.

Warren Carr, Business Development Director, Telus Business Solutions

TELUS is pleased to once again be a Gold Sponsor of BrainTrust?s annual fundraiser, the Pihl Law Paddle for Prevention in support of brain injury education and prevention. The fun relays are also great for staff team building, we?re looking forward to some new costumes again to show our pride! TELUS is proud to support this initiative as it aligns with our philosophy of ?Give where you live? Brain Injury is also a very personal issue to us, as very sadly we lost an employee last year who sustained a brain aneurysm.?

Teams of 4 will participate in a relay race and each team is guaranteed a minimum of two races. You will race around buoys in the water (approximately 50 yards away) and back on a paddleboard. Each of the 4 team members will go once, using only one board that will be passed to the next racer in line.
The top team in each heat will advance to the next round.

There is no fee to register. Instead we ask that each team commit to raising $500 or more.

Team Event:
One person registers as the captain of your team using the Register Now button on this page. Then each of the other three team members will be invited by the team captain via email to join that team. When you follow the link, select "Join a Team" and then choose the team name that the captain has created.

Each team member will create their own personal fundraising page for receiving donations. The team captain will also create a team fundraising page to share your team goals and accept donations to the team.

Click the Register Now button on this page. During the registration process you will create your own personal fundraising page for receiving donations.

Registration deadline is midnight, August 8th.

We aim for everyone to have a good time, and a few common understandings help us all have fun together:

1. All paddlers must complete their race in bare feet only - no footwear is allowed on the paddleboard.
2. Teams of 4 must include 4 different participants - each team member can only go once during the race. (Teams are encouraged to have at least one member of the opposite sex on their team.)
3. This is a stand-up paddleboard event - paddlers must stand on the paddleboard during the race.

Get back in the race with Wildcard Insurance! If your team loses a race, for $100 you can buy a spot in an additional race. Limit of two wildcards per team. Never count anyone out!

In lieu of paying a registration fee, we ask each team to commit to raising $500. We like to show our appreciation to top fundraisers - stay tuned for details about prizes!

Our goal is to raise $70,000! Challenge your fellow competitors to match you as you raise funds for our charity - the only agency in the Central Okanagan providing brain injury programs and services. Our funding is limited and we rely on the generosity of you and others to make it possible for us to continue serving our community.

If a Community Team doesn?t not reach its total fundraising goal of $500, the team will provide any of the remaining funds on the morning of the event.

All funds raised go to the Okanagan-based charity, BrainTrust Canada, for brain injury prevention, education, and direct support services for individuals with acquired brain injury. Visit the rest of our website to learn more about who we are and what we do.

During the registration process you create your own personal fundraising page. All participants are fundraising as individuals, and you can set your own personal fundraising goal.

When you ask people to sponsor you, you give them the link that goes directly to your page. Remember to also share your link on social media like Facebook and Twitter.

Tax receipts will be issued for donations of $20 or more.

You can also collect donations by cash or cheque made out to "BrainTrust Canada Association". Cash/cheques can be submitted to the BrainTrust Canada office any day during office hours, and are due by August 10th.

For corporate sponsorship information please contact Magda Kapp, Director of Prevention Services & Community Engagement. email: mkapp@braintrustcanada.com or call: 250-762-3233 ext. 109
