What empowers you? How do you empower others?

The Empowered project is a community art project centered on the need to empower each other and ourselves. This spring, the City of Kelowna invites the entire community to take part!

By answering 2 questions about empowerment, and drawing a self portrait or a portrait of someone who empowers you in the community, we hope to celebrate what truly brings us together! All responses and drawing donations will be gathered and put into a collage canvas for residents around the city to enjoy.

Join us for the Project & Exhibition Launch at the Rotary Centre for the Arts on March 6th, 2020! Enjoy a performance by Leila Neverland, the wit and prowl of poet Erin Scott and join the #SPEAKOUT movement to support survivors of sexual violence with the Central Okanagan Elizabeth Fry Society's Mandy Glinsbockel.

All ticket donations for the event will support trauma counselling services at the Elizabeth Fry Society.

About the Artist

Ana Eries Luyben created the Empowered project by waltzing into the Accelerate Okanagan office one afternoon in June, 2019.

Since then, she has created a series of portraits called "Empowered Women of the Okanagan". Her series includes women from historical archives, entrepreneurs, Syilx language revitalizers, artists and scholars (to name a few) who's contributions help the Okanagan thrive. Ana Eries is a self taught acrylic painter, musician and mother of 3.

What is #SPEAKOUT?

Elizabeth Fry Society launched the #SPEAKOUT Campaign as a way to break the silence & shine a spotlight on the realities of sexual assault in the Okanagan. This is a movement to engage the entire Okanagan community around speaking out to Support Survivors of sexual violence, and to fundraise for Trauma Counselling Services. The waitlist for trauma counselling for sexual assault currently ranges from between 6 months to over 1 year. This waitlist is due strictly to a lack of funding to implement counselling services.
